Who is Elizabeth Monroe?

Elizabeth Monroe was the wife of James Monroe, who was the fifth President of the United States. She supported her husband, not only when he was President, but also while he served as Ambassador to France, Governor of Virginia, and Secretary of State. She married James at the age of 16 at the end of the War of Independence while he was serving in the Continental Congress. She was influential in saving the Marquis de Lafayette’s wife from certain execution in France and gained a measure of respect and admiration during her time as First Lady.
